Portugal evaluates F-35 as potential replacement for F-16 fleet

Portugal is evaluating proposals to replace its aging fleet of 28 F-16 fighter jets. The United States is actively promoting the F-35 Lightning II as the successor to the current aircraft, which are currently operated by the Portuguese Air Force (FAP) at Monte Real.

Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel confirmed that the government is seriously examining the American proposal following discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. However, Rangel emphasized that Lisbon remains open to other alternatives to ensure decisions align with national interests.

The procurement process involves significant competition from European manufacturers. Dassault Aviation has submitted a proposal for the Rafale and has sought industrial partnerships within Portugal. Other potential contenders include Airbus, which is expected to present a proposal for the Eurofighter Typhoon, and Saab, which is defending the Gripen E. The contract value is estimated to be between 3 and 5 billion euros.
