Portugal expands emergency medical response capabilities
Portugal is expanding its emergency medical response capabilities through new installations and regional planning. In Merceana, the Bombeiros Voluntários have officially launched a Medical Emergency Post (PEM). This facility is part of a nationwide rollout of 44 new PEMs designed to improve response times in areas like the Alto Concelho of Alenquer.
In the northern region, authorities are advancing plans to install a Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER) in Mirandela. Following a meeting between the CCDR-Norte and INEM, officials evaluated the operational requirements, professional training, and coordination needed to establish this specialized pre-hospital care in the Trás-os-Montes territory. Discussions also touched upon the 112 Transfronteiriço project, which aims to enhance medical emergency cooperation between northern Portugal and Galicia.
