Portugal expands golf tourism via Solheim Cup promotion and new tournament

Portugal is expanding its international profile within the golf tourism sector through new promotional efforts and tournament hosting.

Turismo do Algarve will participate in the 2026 Solheim Cup held at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands. The initiative aims to promote the Algarve region to female golf players and fans, highlighting not only golf but also the area's gastronomy, nature, culture, and wellness offerings to reduce seasonal tourism dependency.

Additionally, the Alentejo coast will host the inaugural Portugal Legends Championship from October 30 to November 1 at the Pinheirinho Golf Course in Comporta. As part of the Staysure Legends Tour for professional golfers over 50, the event is expected to feature major winners and Ryder Cup players, including Michael Campbell and Paul McGinley. This tournament marks the international debut of the Pinheirinho course and serves to position the Alentejo region as a distinct golfing destination alongside the established Algarve market.
