Portugal's Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro expands free breast and skin cancer screenings

The Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro (LPCC) is operating a free breast‑cancer screening mobile unit in the municipality of Elvas, Portalegre district, from early August through mid‑October. The unit visits the Pavilhão Multiusos de Santa Eulália, the Pátio Alentejano in Terrugem, the Junta de Freguesia de Vila Boim and the Centro de Saúde de Elvas, offering examinations to women aged 45 and older. Exams are reviewed independently by two doctors to ensure diagnostic accuracy, according to LPCC coordinator Cristina Bruno.

In parallel, the LPCC is conducting free skin‑cancer screenings on beaches across the Algarve, Alentejo and Greater Lisbon until 29 August. Dermatologists use specialised equipment to examine skin lesions between 09:00 and 18:00; participants with suspicious findings are referred for hospital follow‑up. The 2025 campaign screened 510 people, identifying 55 pre‑malignant and 38 malignant lesions, highlighting the importance of early detection.
