Portugal expands musical education through new school programs

New specialized music education initiatives are being launched in Portuguese schools to provide vocational artistic training for students.

In Leiria, the Escola Secundária Monsenhor José Galamba de Oliveira (ESMJGO) is reintroducing a professional musician course. The program will offer tracks in strings, keyboards, wind, and percussion. Upon completion, students will earn European Union Level 4 technical certification, qualifying them to work as performing musicians or continue their studies.

In Benavente, the Samora Correia School Group is also implementing a music education program for the upcoming school year. Supported by a €300,000 investment from the Benavente City Council, the project included the adaptation of six dedicated classrooms and the purchase of musical instruments. The initiative aims to provide local students with access to both general and artistic education within the same municipality, removing the necessity of traveling to conservatories.
