Portugal expands recycling system and advanced biofuel use

Portugal’s waste‑management framework, first overhauled in the 1990s, introduced a nationwide network of ecopoints managed by Sociedade Ponto Verde. CEO Ana Trigo Morais noted that Portugal became the sixth EU country to implement a universal packaging‑recycling system, changing citizens’ disposal habits and promoting material recovery.

In a related push for sustainability, the Associação de Bioenergia Avançada highlighted advanced biofuels derived from waste streams such as used cooking oil and coffee grounds. Secretary‑General Ana Calhôa explained that these fuels “transform waste into clean energy, avoid resource wastage and actively reduce emissions,” while being compatible with existing engines and infrastructure and helping protect soils and waters.

Both initiatives aim to address Portugal’s deteriorating environmental performance and support a circular‑economy transition.
