Portugal expands smartphone ban in schools

Portugal is expanding its national ban on smartphones and internet-connected mobile devices in schools. Following the restriction implemented in the 2025/26 academic year for students in the 1st and 2nd cycles (1st to 6th grade), the government has approved an extension to the 3rd cycle, covering the 7th, 8th, and 9th years. This prohibition applies to public, private, and cooperative institutions during school hours, including non-teaching periods. Exceptions are permitted for authorized pedagogical use, proven health needs, or language translation assistance.

Experts express concern regarding the impact of excessive digital stimulation on child development. There are growing observations of difficulties with attention, low tolerance for waiting, and a decreased ability to engage in independent play. The loss of 'boredom' and unstructured time is noted as a potential hindrance to developing essential skills such as creativity, observation, and frustration management.
