Portugal faces grid reliability challenges amid renewable energy surge

According to a report by GlobalData, the surge in solar, wind, and hydropower capacity creates challenges during periods of low wind or solar output, necessitating flexible, dispatchable capacity to manage potential shortfalls.
Electricity demand in Portugal is projected to rise from 53TWh in 2025 to approximately 57.3TWh by 2030. While renewable investment is booming in regions like Alentejo and Algarve, the power system faces significant pressure. Bottlenecks include slow permitting processes, grid-access delays, and the need for increased investment in energy storage and grid interconnection.
Beyond energy generation, Portugal is positioning itself as a hub for data centers, artificial intelligence, and green hydrogen. However, experts suggest that the country's ability to capitalize on these opportunities depends on improving administrative efficiency. Delays in licensing and unpredictable regulatory processes are cited as potential barriers to maintaining international competitiveness and ensuring the timely execution of major infrastructure projects.
