Portugal features unique geological and architectural landmarks
Portugal hosts unique geological and architectural landmarks, including the Pedras Parideiras in the Serra da Freita region. Located within the Arouca UNESCO Global Geopark near the village of Castanheira, these granite blocks feature dark nodules known as ‘birthing stones.’ These nodules, ranging from 1 to 12 cm, consist of biotite on the outside with quartz and feldspar cores. Their arrangement serves as a geological record of tectonic forces that shaped the region over 300 million years ago.
In northern Portugal, the town of Válega is home to the Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Válega, also known as the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Amparo. While the site has roots dating back to the 13th century, the current structure is the result of various restorations, particularly during the 20th century. The church is distinguished by its exterior decorated with vibrant azulejo ceramic tiles, creating a colorful appearance that differs from many traditional churches where ornamentation is primarily internal.
