Portugal firms weigh the future of workations amid remote‑work debate
The concept of “workation” – combining work and vacation by allowing employees to work remotely from a holiday destination – is being promoted by Robert Walters’ Country Director David Ferreira. He argues that short‑term location changes can boost productivity, concentration and overall well‑being while helping companies retain talent.
A recent survey of over 350 organisations showed that 62% permitted short‑term international remote work or workations in 2024, 27% did not, and 11% were considering it. An Ipsos study found that 33% of respondents intended to work from a holiday location in 2023, a six‑point drop from 2022. In Portugal, ongoing discussions about increased office attendance and reduced remote‑work days could curtail the availability of workation benefits.
Both articles emphasize the psychological advantages of changing environments and note that while the pandemic normalized home offices, workations add a temporary, nature‑focused setting that may improve morale and performance.
