Portugal cost of living rises as food and fuel inflation accelerate
The cost of living in Portugal continues to rise, driven by accelerating inflation and increasing food prices. According to DECO PROteste, the essential consumer basket of 63 products reached 255.97 euros, marking the third consecutive weekly increase. Since the beginning of the year, this basket has risen by 5.85%, while it is 36.37% more expensive than four years ago.
Specific items driving recent increases include chayote tomato (up 18%), sliced bread (up 11%), and tuna in vegetable oil (up 9%). Year-on-year comparisons show significant hikes in fish products such as horse mackerel (30%) and cod (29%).
Broader economic indicators show Portugal's inflation rate accelerated to 3.3% in August 2026, largely due to rising diesel prices. This increase in fuel costs impacts the entire supply chain, raising the costs of food production and transportation. Additionally, rising agricultural inputs, such as a 13.4% increase in fertilizer costs within the EU, pose further risks to future food security and pricing.
