Portugal: Former Deputy Jorge Neto dies at 69

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) has announced the death of former deputy and Secretary of State for Defense and Veterans, Jorge Neto, at the age of 69.

Neto served as a deputy for the Porto district during the VIII, IX, and X legislatures. His political career included serving as vice-president of the PSD Parliamentary Group from 2001 to 2004 and holding the position of Secretary of State for Defense and Veterans during the XVI Constitutional Government under Pedro Santana Lopes.

A lawyer by profession, Neto graduated from the University of Coimbra in 1980. The PSD described him as a man of “notable culture and intelligence” and an active militant who left an indelible mark on national politics and his birthplace, Lousada. His involvement with the party dates back to 1974 through the JSD, and he later directed the newspaper ‘Povo Livre’ between 2007 and 2010.
