Portugal foundation celebrations face historical controversy

A controversy has emerged regarding the government's planning for the 900th anniversary of the founding of Portugal. Originally, government resolutions focused the commemorations on the Battle of São Mamede, positioning Guimarães as the central location for the event.

However, a new resolution has expanded the scope to include the Battle of Ourique and the Treaty of Zamora, appointing Paulo Portas as General Commissioner. This shift has moved the celebrations from a localized event in Guimarães to a broader national cycle. Critics argue this expansion dilutes the historical significance of specific milestones and serves political purposes to protect existing national holidays, such as June 10 and December 1, by preventing the elevation of June 24 to a mandatory national holiday.
