Global energy markets surge amid US-Iran tensions and tanker attacks

Escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran have triggered significant volatility in global energy markets. CENTCOM reported that three Iranian crude oil tankers were targeted in an operation on September 5, contributing to a surge in oil prices. Brent crude recently exceeded 96 dollars per barrel, while WTI rose toward 91 dollars. The security situation in the Strait of Hormuz has also caused a decline in vessel traffic, raising fears of supply disruptions.

These geopolitical risks are driving up fuel costs globally. In the Netherlands, the advisory price for Euro95 gasoline has risen above 2.71 euros per liter, with experts warning it could reach 3 euros on highways. In the United States, diesel prices have reached a historic high of 5.85 dollars per gallon, while gasoline averages 4.15 dollars per gallon.

In Portugal, political debate has intensified over rising fuel costs, with officials noting significant state revenue from increased taxes and prices. Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that oil prices could drop significantly, potentially to 40 or 50 dollars per barrel, once the conflict with Iran concludes and the market becomes oversupplied.
