Portugal fuel sector sees 84% rise in consumer complaints

Consumer complaints regarding fuel services in Portugal have surged by over 84% compared to the same period in 2025. Data from Portal da Queixa indicates that 665 complaints were recorded through August 2026, driven largely by dissatisfaction with loyalty programs, promotions, and unapplied discounts, which now account for 40.15% of total grievances.

Other primary issues include service quality, customer treatment, and financial discrepancies such as incorrect pricing or payment processing errors. Despite the rise in complaints, the average consumer satisfaction score saw a slight increase from 5.98 to 6.14.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP) has clarified common driving myths. Contrary to popular belief, driving in neutral on a descent increases fuel consumption compared to driving in gear without accelerating, as modern electronic injection systems cut fuel flow when the engine is in motion with a gear engaged. Additionally, while opening windows may save fuel at low city speeds, using air conditioning is more efficient on highways at speeds above 70 or 80 km/h to maintain aerodynamics.
