Portugal funds €50 million emergency and psychiatric upgrades, adds local doctor incentives

The Portuguese government has allocated a €50 million envelope to modernise the general and psychiatric emergency services of the National Health Service (SNS). Applications for the re‑qualification programme, which runs until 2027, can be submitted until 8 July and may be funded up to 100 % of eligible costs, covering infrastructure works and new equipment.

In the municipality of Vimioso, the local council and the Northeast Local Health Unit signed a cooperation protocol on 5 June that will pay doctors an additional €10 per hour for open‑consultation work, plus a €50 weekend lodging allowance. The municipality will contribute €52 000 annually to the health unit to sustain up to 434 hours of open‑consultation services each month for roughly 5 000 residents. Both measures aim to improve access, safety and quality of urgent primary care across Portugal.
