Portugal gastronomy becomes a top driver for international tourism

Gastronomy has emerged as one of the top three primary reasons for international tourists to visit Portugal, according to Lídia Monteiro of Turismo de Portugal. During a recent debate in Lisbon, it was noted that food has transitioned from a mere travel complement to a central driver of tourism, fueled by global curiosity regarding the “Portuguese table” and the country's unique climatic influences.

In addition to its growing role in tourism, Portuguese confectionery has received international recognition in a TasteAtlas ranking of the world's best syrup-based desserts. The traditional sweet Toucinho do Céu secured 10th place, while the Ovos Moles de Aveiro ranked 15th. The ranking was led by Greece's Trigona panoramatos.
