Portugal GNR detects over 8,500 tyre infractions in 2025 and warns of summer risks

The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) reported that 8,557 tyre‑related traffic infractions were recorded across Portugal during 2025, with an additional 4,187 offences detected in the first half of 2026. The surge in violations coincides with the build‑up to the summer travel period, when higher temperatures and heavier loads increase the risk of tyre failure.

GNR data show a strong link between defective tyres and road accidents: 889 vehicles involved in crashes in 2025 had tyre anomalies, and 576 accidents were recorded up to 15 June 2026 for the same reason. The police agency issued a safety alert urging drivers to check tyre pressure, tread depth (minimum legal 1.6 mm), visual condition, and to use the spare wheel correctly, while also respecting vehicle load limits and taking regular breaks on long journeys.
