GNR reports over 2,600 cases of animal abuse and abandonment in Portugal

The Portuguese National Republican Guard (GNR), through its Nature and Environment Protection Service (SEPNA), has recorded over 2,600 cases of animal abandonment and abuse since the beginning of 2024. Specifically, authorities identified 982 instances of abandonment and 1,668 cases involving animal deaths or mistreatment across the country.

Between January 2024 and August 2026, the GNR conducted 19,191 inspections focused on the welfare of companion, livestock, and potentially dangerous animals. These efforts resulted in the rescue and recovery of more than 7,500 animals. In the first half of 2026 alone, 2,888 animals were rescued, with 2,156 sent to official collection centers and approximately 300 wild animals returned to their natural habitats.

Regional data shows varying trends. In the Alentejo region, Beja saw an increase in occurrences between 2024 and 2025, while Portalegre reported a downward trend in abandonment. In other districts, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Leiria also recorded significant inspection activities. Additionally, SEPNA conducted 315 inspections regarding the illegal trade of protected species, leading to 265 administrative offenses and 24 criminal proceedings.
