Portugal's Golden Visa draws investors to renewable energy, tech and senior‑care sectors in 2026

Portugal’s Golden Visa program continues to attract high‑net‑worth investors, offering residency and a pathway to citizenship in exchange for qualifying investments. Fund managers are targeting sectors such as renewable energy, technology startups, senior‑care services and aquaculture, with examples including the New Frontiers Energy Fund II’s solar photovoltaic projects and the IMGA Futurum Tech fund’s Portuguese and Brazilian startups.

A recent analysis of six disclosed Golden‑Visa‑linked funds identified 26 underlying companies, 23 of which are headquartered in Portugal—15 in Lisbon and five in Porto. The map of investments shows a concentration of capital in Lisbon’s corporate landscape while highlighting the program’s role in channeling foreign money into domestic enterprises.

Individual investors are also using the scheme to secure citizenship. One investor, former TPG founder Brian Kelly, detailed his personal journey through Portugal’s Golden Visa, investing €350,000 in a hotel project and navigating residency requirements before applying for citizenship.

Comparisons with Italy’s similar scheme underline Portugal’s appeal: a ten‑year residence requirement, a €280,000‑€500,000 investment floor and a relatively straightforward path to citizenship after five years of legal residence.
