Portugal grants 230,000 euro compensation to parents of fallen GNR officer

The parents of Jorge Manuel Fernandes Monteiro, a 29-year-old GNR officer who died in July, will receive a special death compensation of 230,000 euros. The decision was formalized in a dispatch published in the Diário da República and signed by Minister of Internal Administration Luís Neves.

Mr. Monteiro, assigned to the GNR Traffic Detachment of Leiria, was fatally struck by a vehicle on the IC2 road in the Alcobaça area while performing traffic regulation duties. An investigation by the GNR concluded that the accident occurred while the officer was on duty, establishing a causal link between the inherent risks of police work and his death.

The dispatch noted that the scene was properly signaled with GNR vehicles using emergency lights, and officers were equipped with reflective vests and high-visibility flashlights. The compensation amount was calculated according to current legal frameworks, equivalent to 250 times the guaranteed minimum monthly remuneration at the time of death.
