Portugal grape harvests advance due to intense heat

Intense heat and changing climate conditions are significantly advancing the grape harvest across various Portuguese wine regions. In Monção and Melgaço, the Adega Cooperativa Regional de Monção expects to begin receiving grapes on August 21, nearly a month earlier than the typical September start date. Despite the early onset, producers anticipate exceptional quality for the 2026 campaign.

Across the country, the trend of early harvesting is widespread. In the Douro region, harvests have been moved forward by one to two weeks, while in hotter regions such as Tejo and Alentejo, the harvest began as early as July. Frederico Falcão, president of ViniPortugal, noted that rising temperatures and frequent heatwaves are accelerating grape maturation.

To adapt to these shifts, producers are implementing more rigorous vineyard monitoring and precision management. Strategies include more efficient water use, careful soil management, and protecting grape clusters with foliage rather than exposing them to sunlight. Experts suggest that increasing the use of later-maturing or heat-resistant indigenous varieties may be necessary to manage heat and water stress.
