Clothing care: Effective methods for removing common fabric stains

Various methods are available for treating common clothing stains caused by everyday products.

For bleach stains, options include using white vinegar and alcohol for white garments, or applying a paste of baking soda or crushed aspirin to reduce color contrast. For larger areas, textile dyes or fabric markers can help restore color to dark fabrics.

Deodorant stains, often appearing as yellowing on light clothes or white residue on dark fabrics, can be addressed by applying liquid detergent or stain removers to the area before washing. To prevent permanent setting, avoid using high heat until the stain is removed. Similarly, sunscreen stains, which are oil-based and can cause oxidation and yellowing, should be treated with detergent and air-dried to avoid fixation.

Makeup stains, specifically foundation, are complex due to their mix of oils, waxes, and pigments. Experts recommend using enzyme-based stain removers containing lipase and mannanase, or isopropyl alcohol, to dissolve the substances. The recommended process involves scraping off excess product with a spoon or knife to avoid spreading the stain, applying the remover, and then washing the garment.
