Portugal health authority warns of North African dust affecting air quality

The Directorate-General of Health (DGS) has issued an alert regarding poor air quality in mainland Portugal due to an air mass carrying suspended dust from North African deserts. The phenomenon is expected to affect the country on September 14 and 15, primarily impacting southern regions including Lisbon, the Tagus Valley, Alentejo, and the Algarve.

The DGS warns that increased concentrations of inhalable particles (PM10) can impact human health, particularly among sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

Health authorities recommend that the general population avoid prolonged physical exertion and limit outdoor activities. Vulnerable individuals are advised to remain indoors with windows closed whenever possible and to avoid exposure to irritants like tobacco smoke. Patients with chronic illnesses should continue their medical treatments and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
