Portugal Health Minister defends INEM reorganization amid political dispute

Portuguese Health Minister Ana Paula Martins defended a new organizational decree for the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) during a parliamentary debate. Martins accused the previous Socialist administration of leaving the institute in a state of 'palliative care' due to mismanagement.

Specifically, the Minister cited the loss of 35% of INEM staff over eight years and criticized 18 direct contracts for patient transport helicopters made under previous governments. In response, Socialist deputy Carlos Pereira criticized the Ministry's handling of a November 2024 emergency technician strike, noting that nine deaths occurred during that period.

Opposition parties, including Livre, PCP, and Bloco de Esquerda, challenged the Government's move, alleging a lack of transparency and failure to consult workers or deputies regarding the structural changes to the emergency service.
