Hospital Garcia de Orta faces scrutiny over suspension of pregnancy interruption services
The Unidade Local de Saúde Almada-Seixal (ULSAS) has faced scrutiny following the temporary suspension of voluntary interruption of pregnancy (IVG) services at Hospital Garcia de Orta. While the ULSAS confirmed the interruption is temporary and has established a protocol with a facility recognized by the Direção-Geral da Saúde to ensure continuity, patient commissions have raised concerns regarding increased bureaucracy and potential obstacles to access.
In response, Health Minister Ana Paula Martins emphasized that health units must organize themselves to guarantee legal access to IVG within the prescribed timeframes. She stated that if a National Health Service (SNS) unit cannot perform the procedure due to human resource shortages or conscientious objection, it must ensure access through other recognized units and assume the resulting costs.
Political reactions have followed, with the Livre party requesting an urgent parliamentary hearing of the ULSAS administration to understand the reasons for the suspension and the measures taken to ensure safe and timely access. Additionally, an inspection by the Inspeção-Geral das Atividades em Saúde (IGAS) previously identified structural and operational weaknesses in the Gynecology and Obstetrics service of the same unit, noting that the service was closed for more than 60% of the days during a specific period in 2025.
