The first edition of the Empathy in Health Awards has concluded its nomination phase, receiving 149 nominations from across Portugal. The awards recognize individuals, teams, and projects that prioritize the humanization of healthcare. Nominees include clinical professionals as well as non-clinical staff, such as security personnel and catering workers, highlighting that empathy is vital throughout the entire patient experience.
Geographically, the North region submitted the highest number of nominations with 68, followed by Lisbon and Vale do Tejo with 33, and the Center with 11. Leading institutions in nominations include ULS São João (14), IPO Lisboa (11), and IPO Porto (7).
In a related effort to promote excellence in specialized care, the Portuguese Association of Palliative Care (APCP) is also celebrating professionals through awards focused on integrated support for patients with serious and progressive illnesses. These distinctions aim to highlight innovation, community impact, and communication in palliative care, addressing the challenges faced by teams working to ensure dignity and quality of life for patients and their families.
