Portugal highlights historical landmarks from Algarve to Soajo
Portugal features diverse historical and cultural landmarks ranging from the southern Algarve to the northern Peneda-Gerês region.
In Ferragudo, located in the Algarve, the Castelo de São João do Arade stands on a rocky outcrop at the mouth of the Arade River. Originally built for coastal defense and river control, the fortification's current structure dates back to the mid-17th century, though the site has Roman roots. The castle is currently a well-preserved private residence, meaning its interior is not open to the public.
In northern Portugal, the village of Soajo is home to a collection of 24 traditional stone granaries known as espigueiros. Used historically to store grain like maize, these structures were elevated to ensure air circulation and protection from moisture and animals. Some of these granaries date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and feature stone crosses intended to provide divine protection for the food supply. Today, they serve as a significant local attraction.
