Portugal homebuyers cite climate risks as key factor in house purchases

A Cetelem‑Observador survey found that 87% of Portuguese homebuyers now consider extreme climate events when choosing a new dwelling. The most worrying risks are storms, high winds and local tornadoes, cited by 48% of respondents, followed by heat waves (45%).

Portugal differs from the European average, where heat is the top concern (40%). Only 62% of Portuguese say their homes are sufficiently prepared for such hazards, well below the EU mean of 68%, and just 12% are fully satisfied with their dwellings' resilience. More than half (57%) believe they face two or more climate risks, and about 30% identify three or more concurrent threats. The survey highlights a growing demand for housing that can withstand extreme weather as the country adapts to a changing climate.
