Portugal hosts classical concerts in Madeira and Maia

The Classical Orchestra of Madeira will close its 2025/2026 season on Friday, 18 July, with a concert at the Madeira Congress Centre. Conducted by Gianluca Marcianò, the program features violinist Haik Kazazyan performing Aram Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto in D‑minor and Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No 9 “From the New World”. The orchestra will present a 69‑musician symphonic formation and will also hold a violin masterclass for Conservatory students on 16 July.

In the mainland city of Maia, two free classical concerts are scheduled for the weekend. On Saturday at 22:00, the Porto Symphony Orchestra, under José Eduardo Gomes, will play popular works including Verdi’s “A Force of Destiny”, Wagner’s “The Flying Dutchman”, and pieces by Strauss II and Offenbach. On Sunday at 19:00, the Classical Orchestra of Maia, led by maestro Cesário Costa, will perform European repertoire such as Bizet’s “Carmen” prelude, Chabrier’s “España”, and works by Portuguese composers Francisco de Sá Noronha, António Taborda and Eduardo Burnay, alongside Elgar’s “Nimrod”. Both events are open to the public.
