Benjamim Pereira faces backlash over housing sacrifice comments
Benjamim Pereira, president of Portugal's Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU), has issued a clarification after sparking controversy by questioning if current society is prepared for the level of sacrifice made by previous generations to afford housing. Pereira noted that his own grandparents emigrated to Brazil and Argentina to secure homes, suggesting that young people could organize into cooperatives to face the housing crisis.
Political reactions have been divided. The Left Bloc (BE) has called for his resignation, while the Socialist Party (PS) and the Liberal Initiative (IL) described his remarks as “unfortunate” but did not demand his dismissal. Other parties, including the PCP, Livre, and PAN, have requested a parliamentary hearing to address the comments.
Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, stated that Pereira's explanations were “necessary and sufficient” to contextualize the remarks, though he emphasized that the government remains committed to retaining young talent and addressing the national housing drama. Pereira has since retracted his statements, clarifying he had no intention of devaluing the difficulties faced by youth or suggesting emigration.
