Portugal implements full biometric border controls via EES

Portugal has fully implemented the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) as of Sunday, September 6, 2026. This new electronic border regime replaces traditional passport stamps with the mandatory collection of biometric data, including facial images and fingerprints, for non-EU citizens entering the Schengen Area for short stays.

The transition marks the end of a temporary safeguard that allowed authorities to suspend biometric collection during periods of excessive airport congestion. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has noted that the full implementation will likely result in “increased pressure” on border services, particularly at major airports such as Lisbon, Porto, and Faro.

The EES applies to travelers from non-EU countries staying up to 90 days within a 180-day period. EU citizens, as well as nationals from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, are not subject to these new biometric requirements. The system aims to enhance border security and more effectively track overstays within the Schengen zone.
