Portugal implements new taxi tariff regulations

New regulations governing taxi service pricing in Portugal have officially entered into force. The new rules establish a lower flag drop rate and introduce variable tariffs based on both time and distance, with potential increases during festive seasons.

While the regulation is active, taxi drivers have a grace period of 90 days to adapt their taximeters, with a deadline extending to mid-January 2027. The Mobility and Transport Authority (AMT) designed the new system to be more transparent and simple for both passengers and professionals by using a standardized calculation method.

The Portuguese Taxi Federation (FPT) noted that while the AMT accepted operational proposals from industry associations, it rejected economic proposals. Consequently, the FPT stated that prices during the first year will remain similar to those in the previously suspended regulation.
