Portugal implements new teacher salary and recruitment rules
New regulations in the Portuguese education system will link teacher salary processing to the mandatory registration of lesson summaries. Starting in the 2026/2027 academic year, teachers must record all completed lessons within five days of the end of each month. This data will be integrated into central management systems to track teaching activity, including substitute lessons and overtime.
To address teacher shortages, Decree-Law 175/2026 introduces measures to prevent prolonged classroom vacancies. The law allows schools to hire retired teachers and graduates with specific scientific credits in relevant fields, such as Economics or Sociology. Additionally, teachers in high-need pedagogical zones—including Greater Lisbon, the Setúbal Peninsula, and the Algarve—can receive a monthly bonus of 750 euros if they agree to delay retirement when no other staff are available.
