Portugal implements new waste management and urban cleaning initiatives

In Viana do Castelo, the Municipalized Services (SMVC) are launching a pilot project in November for the selective disposal of bulky waste. In partnership with 16 local parishes, the initiative will involve placing two containers in designated areas on scheduled days to ensure proper waste handling and prevent illegal dumping. Local authorities will provide signage and oversight to monitor the process.

Separately, SDR Portugal has submitted a cooperation plan to the Ministry of Environment and Energy to address urban cleaning challenges related to the Deposit and Refund System (SDR). The proposal includes 14 measures organized into four strategic axes. Key priorities involve expanding collection networks, improving solutions for the HoReCa sector, and enhancing coordination between municipalities and waste management entities to mitigate the impact of packaging returns on public spaces.
