Portugal imposes steep fines for running yellow traffic lights as psychologists link driver reactions to personality

In Portugal, the traffic code treats a yellow signal as an obligation to stop, with an exception only when a vehicle is already too close to halt safely. Running a yellow light is classified as a very serious offence, punishable by a fine of €120‑€600, the loss of four licence points, and a possible driving ban of two months to two years.

Brazilian traffic‑psychology experts say that a driver’s instantaneous decision at a yellow light reveals underlying personality traits. Accelerating is associated with low inhibition, high impulsivity and low frustration tolerance, while braking indicates greater emotional control and planning. The choice is viewed as an automatic, subconscious cost‑benefit analysis that mirrors the driver’s behavioural profile.
