Brazil reports high mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases

Data from the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC) reveals that cardiovascular diseases are causing one death every 72 seconds in Brazil. As of October 16, 2026, the country had recorded 318,945 deaths from these conditions, averaging 1,194 deaths per day.

The SBC, in partnership with the World Heart Federation, launched the Cardiovascular Disease Hub to track these trends. While the mortality rate fell by 36% between 2000 and 2024, projections suggest a potential 10.8% increase in annual deaths by 2030 if current trends persist, potentially reaching 462,573 deaths.

Regional disparities exist, with Alagoas reporting the highest mortality rate, followed by Amapá and Mato Grosso do Sul. Experts emphasize that controlling hypertension, diabetes, smoking, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles, alongside rapid medical response to heart attacks and strokes, are critical to reversing these trends.
