Portugal initiates blue carbon methodology consultation
The Portuguese Ministry of Environment and Energy has opened a public consultation for a new methodology focused on the restoration and conservation of seagrass meadows in mainland Portugal. This initiative aims to expand the Voluntary Carbon Market (MVC) to include marine ecosystems, utilizing the concept of ‘blue carbon’ to attract private financing for biodiversity protection and climate action.
The proposal was developed by ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, S.A., in partnership with NBI Natural Business Intelligence, the Marine Science Center of the University of Algarve, and the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies. Contributions can be submitted via the Participa portal until November 22, 2026.
In a separate regional development, Madeira’s Secretary of Tourism, Environment, and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, emphasized the necessity of scientific research and community involvement in marine conservation. During the Madeira Ocean 2026 expedition, Jesus advocated for balancing ocean resource protection with the economic activities of local fishing communities to support a sustainable blue economy.
