Portugal intensifies crackdown on illegal gambling and phone betting

Portuguese authorities are warning players about the growing risk of illegal betting platforms that operate without licensing, consumer protection or reliable payment methods. Such sites lure users with high bonuses and unrestricted market access, but users face potential fraud, financial loss and legal penalties.

The Direcção de Inspecção e Coordenação de Jogos (DICJ) met with casino concessionaires to demand tighter surveillance of telephone betting. Officials highlighted that new technologies enable discreet illegal betting methods, prompting a call for enhanced internal controls, closer cooperation with the Polícia Judiciária and stricter enforcement to curb the expansion of unlawful activities.
