Portugal introduces new nutritional guidelines for school meals
The Portuguese Ministry of Education has released new guidelines for school cafeterias, titled ‘Guidelines for School Meals and Cafeterias 2026’. Developed by the Institute of Education, Quality and Innovation (EDUQA) in collaboration with the Directorate-General of Health, the measures aim to align school nutrition with the Mediterranean diet.
The new regulations prohibit ultra-processed products, such as nuggets and fish sticks, and restrict sweet desserts to only once per month. Instead, fresh fruit with three available varieties will be provided as the standard dessert. Water is designated as the only permitted beverage in school cafeterias.
To promote healthier eating habits, the guidelines mandate a reduction in red meat consumption, limiting it to a maximum of four meals per month and prioritizing white meat. Additionally, the number of fish-based meals should be equal to or greater than meat-based meals. Processed meats like ham and sausages are to be used only minimally for flavoring, and fried snacks such as croquettes or fish cakes are excluded from menus.
