Portugal launches €25 million contest for critical infrastructure energy resilience
The Portuguese government, through the Programa Sustentável 2030, has opened a €25 million contest to fund smart energy systems, networks and storage solutions for critical infrastructure. Up to 85 % of eligible costs can be covered, with funding aimed at entities of the central public administration and state‑owned enterprises that manage essential services such as health, drinking water supply and wastewater treatment.
Projects must integrate three functional components: energy storage, grid interface and the ability to operate off‑grid in case of a network failure. Eligible expenses include studies, designs, acquisition of batteries, photovoltaic panels, monitoring systems, software, civil‑engineering work and related technical assistance. The competition remains open until 20 January 2027.
Economy and Territorial Cohesion Minister Castro Almeida said the measure will "dynamise investment in competitive clean energy" in line with the government’s green industrial strategy, while Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho called it a "fundamental step for the security of critical‑infrastructure supply" during electrical outages.
