Portugal launches mobile driver's license renewal via gov.pt app
The Portuguese government has expanded digital services by allowing citizens to renew their driver's licenses directly through the gov.pt smartphone application. While online renewal was previously available via the IMT portal, this new update enables the entire revalidation process to be completed on mobile devices via iOS, Android, and Huawei platforms.
To use this mobile service, drivers must meet several cumulative requirements: they must hold a valid Citizen Card with an active Digital Mobile Key (Chave Móvel Digital), have a registered national address, and be under 50 years of age. Additionally, the service is limited to category B licenses (light vehicles) for drivers who do not require a medical certificate for revalidation and do not have specific professional restrictions, such as those for taxi or ambulance drivers. The app is intended exclusively for licenses issued in Portugal; foreign license holders must follow standard exchange procedures.
