Portugal launches national contactless payment project for public transport
The Portuguese government and several transport operators have signed a cooperation protocol to develop a national ticketing project. The initiative aims to allow passengers in the Lisbon and Porto metropolitan areas to pay for public transport directly using contactless bank cards at validators, eliminating the need to purchase tickets in advance at machines or service counters.
Promoted by Mobi.E, the project involves eight entities, including CP - Comboios de Portugal, Metropolitano de Lisboa, Metro do Porto, Metro Mondego, TTSL/Soflusa, and the metropolitan transport authorities of Lisbon and Porto. The goal is to create a technological base that facilitates interoperability between different systems and allows for new tariff solutions. By aggregating scale among operators, the project seeks to reduce commissions and costs, eventually expanding these modern ticketing solutions across the entire national territory.
In Porto, local authorities are also implementing changes to urban mobility. The Porto City Council announced new stop locations for tourist buses and tuk-tuks in the downtown and Historic Center areas to manage mobility pressure. Additionally, the municipality plans to extend benefits from the ‘Porto Card’, such as free transport, to municipal workers who do not reside in the city.
