Portugal launches national dementia awareness campaign

On 7 July, Portugal’s Ministry of Health launched a national campaign to raise public awareness of dementia. The initiative seeks to improve health literacy, promote early recognition of warning signs and reduce the stigma surrounding the condition. It emphasises that early symptoms can be mistaken for normal ageing.

Alzheimer Portugal is partnering in the rollout, highlighting dementia prevention as a major public‑health challenge and stressing the need for timely access to care, available treatments and support for people with dementia, their families and caregivers. The campaign is part of the National Health Plan for Dementia and is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). It will run for several months, initially focusing on the message that dementia may develop gradually and be confused with ordinary age‑related changes.
