Portugal launches new funding programmes for scientific startups and SME innovation

The Portuguese National Innovation Agency (ANI) and Startup Portugal have introduced the "Start from Knowledge" programme, allocating €1.5 million to support scientific‑base startups. Eligible projects receive non‑repayable vouchers of €30,000 to cover early‑stage activities such as incubation, proof‑of‑concept development, intellectual‑property protection and marketing. The scheme targets micro, small and medium enterprises founded by recent university or polytechnic researchers, with full upfront payment after acceptance.

Separately, the Portuguese government has opened a €182.5 million competition to finance productive‑innovation investments by mainland micro and small‑medium enterprises. Applications are accepted until 30 September 2026, with funding up to 60 % of eligible costs, especially in low‑density regions. Managed by Compete 2030 and regional programmes, the support aims to boost competitiveness, create qualified jobs and promote sustainable, digital projects.

Both initiatives are part of Portugal’s broader strategy to bridge academic research and market‑ready companies and to stimulate regional economic cohesion.
