Portugal launches QUANTUMvLAB to advance quantum computing readiness

Portugal has launched QUANTUMvLAB, a virtual quantum computing laboratory designed to prepare the national community for future quantum technologies. The initiative provides access to a quantum emulator hosted on the Deucalion supercomputer.

This project is a collaborative effort involving CNCA, INESC TEC, INL, IST, and Fujitsu. By utilizing simulators and emulators, the laboratory aims to bridge the gap between current academic research and the practical application of quantum computing, which is expected to transform fields such as cryptography, artificial intelligence, industrial optimization, and computational chemistry.

The development aligns with broader European investments in quantum infrastructure through the EuroHPC initiative, focusing on building necessary skills and expertise while full-scale quantum hardware remains limited and specialized.
