Portugal launches ‘Viaje sem Pressa’ road safety campaign

Portuguese authorities, including the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the Republican National Guard (GNR), and the Public Security Police (PSP), have launched the ‘Viaje sem Pressa’ (Travel Without Haste) road safety campaign. Running from October 13 to October 19, the initiative is the tenth of eleven campaigns planned under the 2026 National Inspection Plan.

The campaign focuses on the risks of excessive or inappropriate speeding, which remains a primary factor in serious road accidents. According to ANSR data, accidents related to speed caused 154 deaths and 563 serious injuries between 2023 and 2025. The program combines awareness actions led by ANSR with enforcement operations conducted by the GNR and PSP across mainland Portugal.

In the Vila Real district, recent police reports highlighted the ongoing need for vigilance, noting three arrests and 11 road accidents in a single week, including two for driving under the influence of alcohol.
