Brazil and Portugal conduct major road safety and enforcement operations

Law enforcement agencies in Brazil and Portugal have conducted extensive road safety operations and awareness campaigns during the September holiday period.

In Brazil, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) reported varying results across different states. In Alagoas, the ‘Operação 7 de Setembro’ concluded with no fatalities, focusing on sobriety tests and speed enforcement. In Pernambuco, the ‘Operação Independência’ resulted in three deaths and 43 injuries, with significant enforcement regarding alcohol consumption and vehicle weight. In Paraná, the holiday period saw 95 accidents, three deaths, and 98 injuries, with speeding and illegal overtaking identified as primary infractions.

In Portugal, the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the GNR, and the PSP launched the ‘Cinto-me Vivo’ campaign. Running from September 8 to 14, the initiative focuses on the correct use of seat belts, child safety seats, and helmets to reduce injury and death risks. Concurrently, the GNR reported 28 accidents in the Portalegre district between August 31 and September 6, resulting in seven serious injuries and several arrests for driving under the influence and other traffic violations.
