Portugal leads comparable economies in 5G network adoption

Portugal has achieved a leading position in 5G network adoption among countries with comparable wealth. According to data from the nPerf platform covering the period from January to July 2026, 43.3% of all mobile internet speed tests conducted in the country were performed using 5G infrastructure.

This figure places Portugal at the top of its peer group, which includes nations with a GDP per capita between $18,001 and $32,000. Portugal leads ahead of Slovakia (41.8%) and Greece (39.9%), while larger European markets show slower adoption rates, such as Poland at 32.2% and Romania at 26.0%.

The metric reflects the rate of adoption and usage of the new standard rather than absolute connection speeds. The widespread implementation of 5G in Portugal is noted for facilitating smoother browsing, faster large file downloads, and high-resolution video streaming.
