Portugal leads Europe in proportion of Blue Flag beaches

Portugal has achieved the highest proportion of Blue Flag beaches in Europe, according to 2026 data from the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Approximately 64% of the country's beaches, totaling 438 coastal and river locations, have received the international distinction.

The Blue Flag certification evaluates beaches based on water quality, environmental management, safety, accessibility, and environmental education. Portugal's high percentage places it significantly ahead of other European nations. Ireland ranks second with 50% of its beaches distinguished, followed by Cyprus at 47%.

In comparison, other major European tourist destinations show lower proportions of certified beaches, including Greece at 38%, Spain at 35%, France at 14%, Croatia at 12%, and Italy at 11%. The ranking focuses on the percentage of a country's total beaches rather than the absolute number of flags awarded.
